Aqueduto dos Pegões
Rota dos Templários
Castelo de Almourol
This tour takes us through some of the most iconic historical landmarks of Portugal, with a focus on the Templar legacy and medieval architecture, starting with the imposing Convento de Cristo in Tomar.
The Convento de Cristo is one of the country’s most significant historical monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was the headquarters of the Order of the Templars in Portugal and later the Order of Christ. The complex is fascinating, with a mix of architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Manueline, and it includes the famous Charola, a circular chapel, and the Main Cloister, filled with historical details. The convent also played a key role in Portuguese navigation, especially during the Age of Exploration. Here, you’ll explore the Templar legacy and the history that shaped Portugal.
After visiting Tomar, we head to the Aqueduto dos Pegões, an impressive 16th-century engineering feat built to supply water to the city of Tomar. Stretching over 6 km, this aqueduct is an architectural marvel, with majestic arches crossing picturesque rural landscapes.
Next, we embark on the Route of the Templars, a historic road that connects several places of interest related to the Templar Order, including castles, churches, and convents. The route offers a true immersion into medieval history, allowing you to closely explore the remains of this military and religious order that played a significant role in Portugal’s past.
The final stop is at the Castle of Almourol, located on a small island in the Tagus River. One of the most emblematic fortresses in Portugal, the castle has origins dating back to the Christian Reconquest. The medieval structure is surrounded by legends and stories, making it a magical and imposing place. We can reach the castle by boat, providing a unique experience as we cross the river and admire the castle from the water.
